Mahe Seychelles: A Local Guide to Victoria, Morne Seychellois National Park & Hidden Beaches

I have lived on Mahe Island my entire life, and I have guided visitors here for over a decade. Most people arrive expecting a quick stopover before heading to Praslin or La Digue. What they do not expect is how much Mahe Seychelles has on its own: the buzzing capital of Victoria Mahe Seychelles, the misty forest trails of Morne Seychellois National Park, and a string of small beaches that most tourists never find.

This guide gives you the honest, insider view of Mahé so you can experience it the way locals do.

Victoria, Mahé Seychelles, The Capital Through a Local’s Eyes

Victoria Mahé Seychelles clock tower landmark in the capital city surrounded by tropical streets and local markets

Victoria Mahe Seychelles is one of the smallest capital cities in the world, and growing up here I always found it easy to forget just how much character this small city carries. Visitors who rush through it on the way to the ferry miss the whole point. Give yourself at least half a day to walk the streets, eat at the market and talk to people.

Hiking Morne Seychellois National Park, What I Tell Every Visitor

Hiking trail in Morne Seychellois National Park Mahé Seychelles surrounded by tropical rainforest and mountain views

Morne Seychellois National Park is the green heart of Mahe Island, and it covers almost a third of the island. I have hiked here more times than I can count, but I still find something new each time. The forest is dense, the trails can be steep, and the views over the coast make every step worth it.

What I Always Bring on a Morne Hike:

  • At least 1.5 litres of water per person: The forest is humid even when it does not rain.
  • A light rain jacket or packable poncho: Morne Seychellois gets afternoon showers.
  • Solid walking shoes: Trails are rocky and roots can be slippery.
  • Insect repellent: Especially for early morning hikes.
  • A camera or fully charged phone for views at the summit lookouts.

Best Trails in Morne Seychellois National Park

TrailDifficultyDistanceHighlight
Tea Factory Trail (Chemin Forest)Moderate~3 km loopOld colonial tea factory ruins and forest views
Morne Blanc TrailModerate–Hard~2 km one wayBest summit view over west Mahé coast
Copolia TrailModerate~4 km returnGranite plateau with panoramic island view
Val Riche TrailEasy–Moderate~2 km loopQuiet forest walk, good for birdwatching

Start with the Copolia trail if you are only going to do one trail. It is the best balance of effort and reward, and the granite plateau at the top is unlike anything else on Mahe.

Hidden Beaches of Mahe, Where I Take People Who Want to Escape the Crowds

Hidden beach on Mahé Island Seychelles with granite boulders turquoise water and quiet tropical scenery

Most visitors to Mahe Island head straight to Beau Vallon Beach because it is the largest and most well-known beach on the island. I take visitors there too, but I always follow it with a smaller, quieter cove that reminds them why Mahe Seychelles is special.

Beaches I Recommend on Mahe Island Seychelles:

  • Beau Vallon Beach: Long, calm, good for swimming and watersports. Best for first-timers.
  • Anse Soleil: Small and peaceful, on the west coast. Ideal for couples or a quiet afternoon.
  • Anse Intendance : Wild waves and dramatic scenery, not always safe for swimming but stunning to walk.
  • Police Bay: Remote, often empty. You will need a car to reach it but it is worth every minute.
  • Petit Anse:Hidden cove that many tourists skip. I rate this as one of my personal favourites on all of Victoria Mahe Seychelles coastline.

My strategy: Pair one popular beach in the morning with one quiet cove in the afternoon. This way you get the best of both worlds without feeling rushed.

Getting Around Mahe Island

Public bus travelling along coastal road on Mahé Island Seychelles with ocean view

Mahe Seychelles has a public bus network run by SPTC that covers the main coastal roads and connects Victoria with most beaches and towns. Buses are affordable but can be infrequent on weekends, so plan your timing carefully.

Transport Options on Mahe Island Seychelles:

  • Bus: Cheapest option, good for central routes. Book a seat to Victoria Mahe from most coastal areas.
  • Car Rental: Best for Morne Seychellois National Park trailheads and remote south coast beaches.
  • Taxi : Convenient but expensive for longer distances. Agree on price before you get in.
  • Scooter or Bicycle: Possible in flat coastal areas but steep hills inland make this challenging.

I personally rent a car for at least one full day to reach the trailheads and southern beaches. For everything in and around Victoria, the bus system works perfectly well
